Zdenek Sykora 90 Exhibition / Municipal Library February 19 – May 02, 2010

 Region : Prague

http://ghmp.cz/english/

An exhibition dedicated to the ninetieth birthday of Zden?k Sýkora introduces him primarily as a painter, who has devoted himself systematically to investigating the language of the fine arts for more than fifty years now. In a representative selection there are program structural works of the sixties next to later linear paintings, based on the principle of randomness.
The installation of the works from prestigious foreign as well as domestic collections shows his lifelong work as a compact whole that always directly expresses the same without regard to presently used system or graphic method - the astonishment of the painter over the nature and the joy of life. Contrary to the retrospective show of his work that took place in the Municipal Library in the year 1995, this exhibition is more oriented on some basic topics and clarification of key ideas as for example structure, system or chance. An original concept of these principles is the reason why is the work of Zden?k Sýkora a permanent part of the rational stream of world arts already since the sixties.

Gaspard of the Night Exhibition / FUTURA March 03 – May 09, 2010

 Region : Prague

http://www.futuraproject.cz/en/

Participating artists: Daniela Barackova, Jiri David, Marek Meduna, Marketa Othova, Michal Pechoucek, Jiri Skala, Slava Sobotovicová, Pavel Sterec, Ivan Svoboda, Jan Serych, Roman Stetina. The Gaspard of the Night exhibition emphasizes elements of the gothic and the grotesque in works by selected Czech contemporary artists. The show thus functions as an anachronistic attempt to view the current, post-conceptual tendency through the prism of aesthetic categories rooted in Romanticism. It positions side by side two types of irony: the romantic, in which an aesthetic experience allows the viewer to overcome his fear that grasping the world is an impossibility, and the post-conceptual, which appropriates cultural codes for the purpose of ridiculing them.

Dokoupil 100 Exhibition / Prague Castle Riding School March 03 – May 23, 2010

Region : Prague

http://www.dokoupil100.cz

"The point is to bear certain vision inside and look at the world as if you were looking for something. And when you are ready, you will find it. You just need to know what you want. I felt I wanted to newly define painting for myself." Dokoupil. Jiri Georg Dokoupil is one out of the few Czech post-war artists who has established himself on the international art scene. Art reviewers mostly consider him to be a part of the postmodern painting, which developed mainly in Germany and Italy in the 80´s and 90´s. His work as a whole is not easy to define with respect to the great plurality of styles that he uses. This plurality of styles reflects his strong belief that the most important thing in art is to seek, rather than to find, and at the same time, it shows his unfailing imagination and creative energy used to capture the various themes. Permanent characteristics of his work are the changeability, permanent quest and exploration of new themes intimately connected with the invention of new expressional forms. Exhibition is organized by Prague Castle Administration in cooperation with Prinz Prager Gallery, Galerie Bruno Bischofberger and Galerie Andrea Caratsch. Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition Dokoupil 100 is available for sale in the bookshop at the Prague Castle Riding School.

Zdenek Sklenar Ten Thousand Things - Ten Thousand Years Exhibition / The Stone Bell March 17 – June 06, 2010

 Region : Prague

http://ghmp.cz/english/

This coming April one hundred years will have passed from the birth of a leading figure of Czech art, the painter, illustrator and educator, Zden?k Sklená?. There is virtually no one in this countrywho would not have come across with hiswork, as for instance Sklená?´s illustrations for the standard edition of Ancient Greek Myths and Legends have been known to junior readers for decades. The wide, indeed universal accessibility and individuality of Sklená?´s output was most recently documented by the sensational success of an exhibition of hiswork staged at the ChinaNational Art Gallery last April. The current extensive retrospective, at The Stone Bell in Prague, is centered most notably around his painting, which came to approximate the status of a legend still during the artist´s lifetime. The artist´s inimitable painterly idiom synthesizes diverse cultural influences across the centuries and regardless of geographic distance.

Bob Dylan in Prague June 11, 2010

Region : Prague, 20:00 O2 Arena

http://www.bobdylan.com

Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman; May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. He has been a major figure in popular music for five decades Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when he was at first an informal chronicler, and later an apparently reluctant figurehead of social unrest. A number of his songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind” and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" became anthems for the civil rights and anti-war movements. His early lyrics incorporated a variety of political, social and philosophical, as well as literary influences. They defied existing pop music conventions and appealed hugely to the then burgeoning counterculture. Dylan has both amplified and personalized musical genres, exploring numerous distinct traditions in American song – from folk, blues and country to gospel, rock and roll and rockabilly, to English, Scottish and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and swing. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboard, and harmonica. Backed by a changing line-up of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the Never Ending Tour. His accomplishments as a recording artist and performer have been central to his career, but his greatest contribution is generally considered to be his songwriting. He has received numerous awards over the years including Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Awards; he has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2008 a Bob Dylan Pathway was opened in the singer's honor in his birthplace of Duluth, Minnesota. The Pulitzer Prize jury in 2008 awarded him a special citation for what they called his profound impact on popular music and American culture, "marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power.

Grand Prix of the Czech Republic August 13 - 15, 2010

Region : Brno, South Moravia

Brno – Automotodrom (Racing Track) Brno. World Championship of Road Motorcycles.
For the first time, Brno hosted the World Motorcycle Championship in 1965. However though the organisers did their best, the old racing circuit complied with the security requirements less and less, so in years 1983 - 1986 only the elite of the European championship came to Brno. Only opening of the new Masaryk Circuit at Kyvalka in 1987 returned Brno among the top organisers of Europe and except the 1992 season it has been opened for motor-cycling championships of the world every year. The organisers from Brno are no outsiders, and the IRTA Trophy, which they received twice, is a proof of it. The award is given by the International Riders and Teams Association to the overall best Grand Prix of the season. Also three Italian top protagonists of the contemporary MotoGP class have good memories of Brno. Seventeen years ago Loris Capirossi succeeded in defending of his title of the World Champion in the 125cc class, five years later Valentino Rossi celebrated his very first Grand Prix victory in a 125cc class race at Kyvalka and in 1997 Marco Melandri experienced his first World Motorcycle Championship race here in Brno. He enjoyed the atmosphere of the Masaryk Circuit even more in the next season, when he triumphed in the 125cc race and became the youngest winner in the history of the Brno circuit.

Along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, they are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, although some band members have tried not to categorise themselves as any one genre. The band also incorporated classical music, blues-rock, pop and progressive rock elements. They were once listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's loudest band, and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide. Deep Purple were ranked #22 on VH1's Greatest Artists of Hard Rock programme. The band have gone through many line-up changes and an eight-year hiatus (1976–84). The 1968–76 line-ups are commonly labeled Mark I, II, III and IV. Their second and most commercially successful line-up featured Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (keyboards), Roger Glover (bass) and Ian Paice (drums). This line-up was active from 1969 to 1973 and was revived from 1984 to 1989 and again in 1993, before the rift between Blackmore and other members became unbridgeable. The current line-up including guitarist Steve Morse has been much more stable, though Lord's retirement in 2002 has left Paice as the only original member to have never left the band.
